Whenever trying new treats for your dog, always be aware of specific dietary needs and restrictions your dog may have. If in doubt always check with your veterinarian Most dogs like fruit and vegetables. Apples, bananas, peaches and even small amounts of oranges are healthy treats for your dog. Next time you're having a snack, ask your dog to join in. WARNING!! It has recently been shown that grapes, macadamia nuts, artificial sweetener XYLITOL (found in sugar free gum) and raisins can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Research is continuing to find out why, but they may cause kidney problems. NEVER, NEVER give these to your dog and be sure they are out of reach for counter surfing dogs. Most vegetables are safe treats. Try cut up carrots, tomatoes, snap peas, green beans and sweet potatoes, etc. Use your imagination. Offer your dog a small piece of the vegetable that you are preparing for dinner. Stay away from raw potatoes. The starch content may be too high for your dog to digest. WARNING!! Do not give your dog onions or anything containing onions. They can be harmful to your dog. Other treats to try include:
Wheat, corn or rice chex type cereal
Cheerios type cereal
Rice cakes (unsalted)
Popcorn
Bread (or just the crust)
One or two peanuts
Whole wheat crackers
Small amounts of cheese (a cube the size of a dice) or string cheese
WARNING!! Most of us know that chocolate is harmful to dogs but did you know that artificial sweeteners can also be harmful? REMEMBER, your dog is not a garbage disposal. If you wouldn't eat it, don't give it to your dog. High fat, high starch, sugar and salty foods can be life threatening. If you are not sure about the safety of the food, always talk with your veterinarian. |

Place one package of BEEF LIVER in a pan and cover with water. Simmer for about 20 minutes, turning several times. You can also add fresh garlic cloves of powdered garlic to the water. When liver is cooked place on a baking sheet. You can line the sheet pan with foil for easier clean up. You can also lightly spray the pan with vegetable spray. Place in the oven at a low temperature, about 250 – 300 degrees. You want to dry the liver, not bake it. This will take about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your oven. Turn the liver once or twice during the baking time. It should end up looking like jerky. Let it cool. Break half and place in a freezer bag. Just before you come to class, take out one or two pieces. It will be ready to use by the time you get there. |

SWEET POTATO TREATS Wash one MEDIUM SWEET POTATO. Cut into about 1/4 inch slices. Place on several layers of paper towel and cover with another layer of paper towels. Put in microwave and cook at high power for about 5 minutes. Turn potatoes over and cook again for about 5 - 6 minutes. Remember, all microwaves are different, so your cooking time may vary. What you should end up with are semi-soft potato slices. I know, it doesn't sound good, but this is for your four-legged friend, not you. These will keep best in the refrigerator in a sealed container for about 7 - 10 days. |
